''I come in and see how far my colleague from the other shift has come. We work with a team of nine turners in two shifts. I pick up where my colleague left off. At the beginning of the week, we make a division of labor with each other. Together we made a priority list, on this basis you work. Of course, this is not cast in concrete (or metal). In reality, anything can happen and you have to adjust this planning in between. Because I have a lot of turning experience and like a challenge, I often take on the newer projects or the more difficult work. We have several measuring moments during the process before the product goes to the final measurement in the measuring room.''
''Calmness and accuracy are essential within my role. If you work in a hurry, you are more likely to make a mistake. Machining is very precise work, so the error margins are also minuscule. For example, it is essential that you pay close attention to input when making the programs. We turn on the lathe to roundnesses of below μ. All products are fully checked for error margins before they leave VDL ETG. As a result, the customer can assume that the part or product delivered is error-free. I would therefore describe the core of my job as challenging, accurate and a team of great colleagues.''
''The best thing about working at VDL ETG is the new work that requires a new program. I prefer to work on things that are on the edge in terms of possibilities. Then the challenge is to keep calm and keep working on it until it succeeds! Besides the precise machining work using a machine, I also still really enjoy doing conventional work. With our team, we really work together to achieve goals. We have the commitment to get things done, a 9 to 5 mentality doesn't fit then: the balance is good! I am happy to come to work every day, but am also happy to go home.''
''That would have to be the nomination for the Noordhof Prize. The appreciation you get for your craftsmanship is always nice. Every day you try to challenge yourself more and improve your work. It's always nice when your work is recognized, I'm proud of that. I am every day when we deliver good products again and achieve our goals.''
''Within this job it is important that you are eager to learn. Turning is real craftsmanship, you have to put in the effort and keep challenging yourself. When it becomes routine work, mistakes creep into your work more easily, which you want to avoid. Within our team of machinists, we always try to help each other if we can't figure something out. That way we learn from each other and improve our skills At the same time, it is important that you know how to keep calm. That way you are more focused and you can do your work as well as possible.''
