‘It was a big step for me: from electrician in production to operational buyer in an office. But it was a fun change, I haven't regretted it for a day. In my position as operational buyer, I am responsible for purchasing and monitoring purchases of parts for our electric buses. For this, I have a lot of contact with suppliers and customers. It is a challenging field of work; you never know what adventures the day will bring you. For example, the planning runs differently or an emergency comes along. It is challenging, and I love that. Especially because I am very problem-solving. I can put that to full use here. You have to interact with a lot of people. My work is an interesting puzzle that you can only solve together.’

Taking steps together

‘VDL is a forerunner in innovation. VDL Bus & Coach, the bus division of VDL Groep, was one of the first to market electric buses. And we keep launching new projects and developing prototypes. That keeps the work challenging, precisely because most of the time it doesn't happen by itself. You don't just work through a routine, you have to stay sharp, persevere and enjoy every step you take together. That is why it is super important to stay in good contact with each other and use each other's strengths to arrive at the best solution. VDL employs people with all kinds of backgrounds, experiences and knowledge. I am convinced that this contributes to the great strides we make. In recent years, for example, we have developed a new production line together and are in the process of developing an eighteen-metre-long electric bus.’

Connected

‘It is super fun to work in that changing market, this keeps you developing yourself. But the best thing about my job is the contact I have with everyone. Both with colleagues and suppliers. For me, that is the common thread. We know each other, we really feel connected. Every day I learn something new from my colleagues. They are very open and like to share their knowledge. As a result, I learn new things very quickly. VDL invests a lot in this. Not only in formal settings, but also informally, which allows us to get to know each other better. I find that very important, because I believe that only then can you work well together. I find it very special that, despite VDL being an international group, we still have an enormous family atmosphere. Regardless of who you are and what your background is. You are appreciated and included in the team here. Even though there are about a hundred of us in the office, we easily walk in on each other. ’
