Abdulle Apprentice machining

VDL TIM Hapert

"At the moment I'm doing a work-based training (BBL course), which means I go to school one day a week. The things I learn at school I can immediately put into practice at VDL. I really learn a lot, also about things that are not necessarily metal-related, such as controlling robots. It's really cool to be able to take on more and more responsibility. I always want to know more about the environment I work in, what products there are and what it takes to make them. My education helps me, of course, but working in practice is especially instructive for me. It would be nice if one day I become the best machinist at VDL. Dreams are allowed, right?’

Making mistakes is allowed

‘The products I make really have to be of high quality, because the end product has to be one hundred per cent safe. That's a big responsibility. So I still sometimes ask my colleagues for help. The great thing is that they always help me on my way and make time for this. And I don't have to be afraid of making mistakes. I am always allowed to try something and get all the help I need. The fact that you are given this responsibility as a student is very special and I really appreciate it. It allows me to develop very well. I started in production, but now I can also control robots. That is actually an operator task. It is great that there is so much confidence in my abilities. My supervisor Cor is also very proud. He sees a very nice career for me within VDL.’

New robots

‘VDL is modernising and automating. This affects my work. For example, there will be new machines, robots, which will make the work easier and more fun. We will soon be able to focus even more on product quality. That means we will move to another place with all those new robots. We can produce more there; the machine doesn't have to stand still. For my job, this means I will be multitasking, instead of focusing on one task. That seems quite exciting, but fortunately I get very good guidance. So I am confident that I will soon be able to work well with that too.’
